DisabledGo came over to Guernsey in September specifically to share how they undertake access surveys and to give individuals the opportunity to shadow and to survey some of the smaller shops in St Peter Port.
Janina and Peter were very interested in finding out more about DisabledGo and getting involved with the access surveys which they did. The staff in all of the shops were happy for Janina and Peter to ask questions and were interested in what they were doing. Most of the staff did not have access to Disability Awareness Training so from now on as DisabledGo survey shops they will share the flyer about Disability Awareness online training.
The Matrons at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital met with Nikki Stephens from Guernsey Hard of Hearing Association to share ideas about how ward and out-patient staff can improve the experience for people with a hearing loss visiting the PEH. The Matrons were keen to learn about the different tools and equipment available and are currently asking their teams to complete the Disability Awareness online training which will be followed up by a face to face theory and practical session with Nikki in the next few weeks.
I am closely involved in developing the overall Project Plan for the Disability and Inclusion Strategy and the latest draft will be discussed by the Project Board when it meets on the 20th October.
Audit of the States of Guernsey Committees in preparation for the Disability Discrimination Legislation: plans to carry out the audit are progressing well and the initial discussions with senior key staff across the States will commence on 17 October.
