Although there were a few spots of rain, that didn’t stop a large crowd of Dave Purdy’s friends and family gathering at the Market Square Ramp to watch the Bailiff unveil a memorial stone in Dave’s honour on Friday 11th November.
For photos of the event, go to the Guernsey Disability Alliance Facebook page.
The day began with an interview with Rob Platts, the GDA’s Founder, on the Jim Cathcart Show on BBC Guernsey that morning. To listen, click here, then click ‘Listen Now’ and move the slider to 1:40:00.
During the ceremony itself at 12.45pm Rob gave a moving speech in tribute to all Dave’s achievements. To read it and see some excellent panoramic photos, go to Richard Lord’s Sustainable Guernsey website.
Before unveiling the stone, the Bailiff spoke of his memories of Dave and how right it was that he be honoured in this way. He spoke without notes but many of the personal stories he’d shared about his friendship with Dave were reproduced on BBC Guernsey later on the Friday evening news. He also emphasised the significance of Dave’s memorial stone being sited halfway up towards a “level playing field”. To listen, click here, then click ‘Listen Now’, then move the slider to 1:06:30.
There was further coverage on the BBC website and also on Island FM.
