In January 2013, Paralympic athlete Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE visited Guernsey at the invitation of the Guernsey Disability Alliance to encourage the island to bring in disability equality legislation.
Speaking to a large audience of politicians, civil servants, business leaders and GDA members, the Baroness stressed that simplicity was the key to having a law that worked. While shocked that Guernsey did not yet protect its disabled citizens from discrimination, Tanni highlighted the opportunity to learn from best practice around the world and not just import the UK law.
