Paralympian and parliamentarian, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, has become a patron of the Guernsey Disability Alliance. The exciting news was announced to our members and supporters as we celebrated our fifth birthday party, hosted by the Guernsey Cheshire Home.
Tanni visited Guernsey in January 2013 at the request of the GDA and the Guernsey Sports Commission. While in the island she held a well-attended breakfast briefing for deputies, business leaders, civil servants and GDA members and made a strong case for the introduction of a simple disability equality law for Guernsey.
The Baroness sent a personal message to GDA members that was read out at the party:
“I have fantastic memories of my first ever trip to Guernsey earlier this year. Thank you to everyone I met for making me feel so welcome. As I said at the time, I am shocked that Guernsey doesn’t have a disability equality law but at least being so late to the party means you can learn from others’ mistakes and develop something simple and effective. Please keep me updated and let me know how I can help. The GDA is a wonderful example of the power of working together and I would be honoured to be your patron. Happy Birthday.”
