Deadline: 30th September 2024
Age Discrimination Consultation
The Committee for Employment & Social Security is seeking views from key stakeholders and the public on policy questions relating to protection against age discrimination as part of the second phase of the development of the Prevention of Discrimination Ordinance.
Age discrimination is important for anyone affected by disability as we gain more impairments as we age and will also have different caring responsibilities for parents or grandparents etc as well as children and grandchildren. It is important not to be discriminated on age even though we might be protected through disability and carer status. There is also an obvious intersection between age and disability in that older people with impairments might be treated less favourably than younger people with impairments.
Please help to inform the States on what we should have as protection for age discrimination by completing the consultation or getting in touch with Carol at the GDA by email at carol@disabilityalliance.org.gg.
Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, Vice-President of the Committee, said:
"Age, as a protected ground, is in some ways different to other protected grounds covered by the legislation. That means that specific policy considerations are required to make sure that appropriate and practical protections are in place, while ensuring that legislation only prohibits genuinely harmful treatment.
It is important that we obtain a wide range of views from across the community. We are hopeful that stakeholders will engage with this process and are grateful for their time and input."
The consultation period with respect to age discrimination will close on 30th September 2024.
The Committee will then consider the responses to the consultation and agree upon its final policy proposals.
The Committee intends to take a Policy Letter to the States setting out its final proposals for Phase 2 of the Discrimination Ordinance before the end of this term of government.
